    Strategic Advisor and AI Lead, Hacks/Hackers

    Paul Cheung is a mission-focused leader with over 25 years of experience in philanthropy, nonprofit management, and media innovation. As Strategic Advisor and AI Lead for Hacks/Hackers and the Online News Association, he architects frameworks to accelerate AI adoption in journalism and develops scalable programs for newsroom innovation. His career spans leadership roles at major organizations including the Center for Public Integrity, Knight Foundation, NBC News, The Associated Press, The Miami Herald and The Wall Street Journal, where he has driven initiatives in AI integration, business sustainability, and inclusive practices. He provides executive leadership training for organizations including the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies, Asian American Journalists Association, and The New York Times, while guiding media organizations through operational planning and revenue optimization. Cheung serves on the boards of The Literacy Lab and The Institute for Independent Journalists. A graduate of NYU with a Sulzberger Fellowship from Columbia University

      A layoff forces a question most people avoid: what do you actually want? This session gives you tools to answer it honestly.

      You will use a 2x2 to map joy against growth, revealing what your career choices say about your priorities. You will apply the power-influence matrix to workplaces you are already in, learning to spot allies and read power dynamics before your next move. Then you will build three Odyssey Plans, each a different version of where your life and career could go.

      Based on the Designing Your Life framework, this exercise breaks tunnel vision and opens up options you may have dismissed too quickly. You will rate each plan on confidence, engagement, and alignment with who you are, and walk away with a clearer, more honest picture of what is possible.
