    Eric Wishart is Standards and Ethics Editor, and former editor-in-chief, of the international news agency Agence France-Presse and the author of Journalism Ethics: 21 Essentials from Wars to Artificial Intelligence.
    He teaches classes on ethics and the use of AI in journalism at Hong Kong University, is a former president of the Foreign Correspondents’ Club, Hong Kong, and is a member of the Organisation of News Ombuds and Standards Editors.
    Eric’s areas of expertise include reporting and writing, media ethics, journalists’ safety, the application of artificial intelligence in journalism, and the fight against disinformation.

      In politically polarized societies, journalists covering power, corruption, and human rights face compounding risks - from gendered and minority-targeted harassment to state inaction and shrinking civic space. Across Asia, coordinated online hate campaigns against journalists often escalate into real-world violence, while governments tighten their grip on independent media.This session examines the online-to-offline violence continuum, the erosion of press safety, and what practical, cross-border solutions journalists, newsrooms, and regional networks can adopt to better protect their own.

      Panelists will explore the regulatory landscape taking shape across Asia and beyond, the ethical lines that must not be crossed, and the strategic decisions that will define which news organizations thrive in an AI-driven media environment.
