Diana Lu

    Senior Program Officer, MacArthur Foundation

    Diana serves as a Senior Program Officer for the Journalism & Media program at the MacArthur Foundation, where she leads the participatory civic media work. Previously, she led and sunsetted the Knight-Lenfest Local News Transformation Fund, a five-year, $20 million joint venture designed to strengthen local journalism at scale by supporting journalistic excellence and serving the information needs of communities. As a journalist, she served as a community engagement editor and columnist for public media, neighborhood news projects, and independent publications. In her previous life in economic development, she worked in the public, nonprofit, and education sectors to help local businesses with grants and strategic growth.

      In today’s rapidly shifting media and information environment, strategic communication is no longer only about external messaging - it is also about how organizations communicate internally, lead teams through change, and stay aligned under pressure. From evolving audience behaviors and platform disruption to economic uncertainty and cross-border collaboration, professionals must communicate with clarity, credibility, and purpose.

      This session explores how journalists, communications professionals, and emerging leaders can strengthen both outward-facing and internal communication strategies.

      Topics include stakeholder management, team alignment, decision-making during change, reputation management, and building trust with audiences and colleagues alike.

      Participants will leave with practical tools to communicate more effectively in dynamic environments.
