    Beimeng Fu is an independent multimedia journalist from China. She reported from China between 2017 and 2023, working with Sixth Tone and ABC News, and contributing to The Washington Post and Goldthread among others. She also taught visual media at the university level. Since relocating to Mexico at the end of 2023, her work has taken a human-centered approach to examining Global China and the evolving experiences of the Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia and Latin America. She publishes The Southern Chinatown, a Substack newsletter focused on these dynamics in Latin America, and is currently pursuing a long-term reporting project on China’s growing demand for durian. Her first co-authored investigation—on how Chinese demand for durian is reshaping rainforests in Laos—was supported by the Pulitzer Center and published by Nikkei Asia in English and Initium Media in Chinese.
