Allen Cheng

    Founder and Chief Adviser, Advise Insight Ltd

    Allen T. Cheng is the founder and Chief Adviser of Hong Kong-based Advise Insight Ltd, a business intelligence firm that specializes in pre-initial public offering and pre-investment due diligence services across Asia and the Greater China region. A former financial journalist, Cheng spent more than 30 years in journalism before going into business for himself in 2018. His heart remains in journalism, however. In 2024, Cheng’s Advise Insight launched Blockwind.news, a news website that tracks the latest trends in blockchain technology and cryptocurrency markets.

    Cheng is also a director of Hong Kong-based Strategic Sports Ltd., the world’s largest sports helmet manufacturer.

    A longtime journalism activist, Cheng cofounded the Asia chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association in 1996, served as the chapter president from 1996 to 2006, a vice president from 2007 to 2009, and was co-chairman of the chapter’s inaugural N3Con regional conferences in 2011 and 2012.

      This year, we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of AAJA's Asia chapter — a milestone that calls for both reflection and a forward-looking conversation.

      In the first half of this special session, we have invited former AAJA-Asia presidents to look back on their journey: why they joined AAJA in the first place, what role the association has played in their careers, what sets AAJA apart from other journalism networks, and a defining memory from their time leading the chapter.

      In the second half, AAJA leaders will share their vision for the future — how they are navigating the industry's challenges within their own organizations, and what a community like AAJA can and should do to better support journalists: helping them stay relevant, grow their careers, and weather an increasingly turbulent profession.
