    AAJA is proud to celebrate the 16th edition of the New.Now.Next Media Conference (N3Con) and the 30th anniversary of its Asia Chapter, set to take place May 21-23 at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.

    Artificial intelligence is reshaping the very foundations of journalism — from how stories are produced to how audiences discover and engage with news. In this rapidly evolving landscape, the media industry must collectively reimagine what news and information products can and should look like.

    Journalists need to harness AI responsibly and cost-effectively to enhance their reporting, streamline workflows, and develop innovative storytelling formats — while upholding journalism’s core values. At the same time, they must sharpen their capacity to scrutinize the broader societal implications of AI systems, from automated decision-making and data governance to algorithmic bias.

    Over two and a half intensive days, N3Con 2026 will bring these conversations to the fore. The conference will also tackle pressing issues such as climate reporting, collaborative journalism, journalists’ safety and mental health and the growing competition for audiences from content creators and influencers.

    Beyond the main program, N3Con 2026 will also host the sixth edition of AAJA’s Executive Leadership Program (ELP) Asia, a Climate Collaboration Challenge and a series of individual clinics and coaching sessions tailored to the needs of today’s news professionals.

    • Chulalongkorn University was originally founded during King Chulalongkorn's reign as a school for training royal pages and civil servants in 1899 at the Grand Palace. It was later established as a national university in 1917, making it the oldest institute of higher education in Thailand.

      N3Con participants are warmly invited to join a short guided shuttle bus tour around Chulalongkorn University to explore key university landmarks and campus highlights comfortably while avoiding the afternoon heat. The shuttle will departure from the reception area shortly after the Orientation Session.

    • Climate change is among the most consequential stories of our time. Environmental reporting however routinely collides with powerful political and economic interests, while shrinking newsroom budgets leave little room for the ambitious, sustained coverage the crisis demands. Transforming climate journalism requires a fundamental shift in approach: embracing its inherently cross-border nature, pooling resources across newsrooms, and producing stories that drive tangible impact for the communities most affected.

      The Climate Collaboration Challenge Asia, launched by AAJA-Asia, the Temasek Foundation, and climateXchange, is rising to that challenge. This session showcases the programme's participating teams, each delivering a five-minute pitch of their collaborative cross-border climate project before a jury of senior news professionals. The winning consortium(s) will receive a grant of up to USD 15,000 to develop and publish their work.

      Before the winners' announcement, Ralph Gregor, Senior Manager for Digital Strategy at Inquirer.net will present "Asean vs. Plastic" - a crossborder collaborative journalism project involving Deduktif.id (Indonesia) Inquirer.net (Philippines), Malaysiakini (Malaysia), Mediacorp (Singapore), which was awarded a grant at N3Con 2025. Ralph will share with the audience the challenges the participating newsrooms met for jointly produce this exciting projects and the lessons they learned in the process.

    • A layoff forces a question most people avoid: what do you actually want? This session gives you tools to answer it honestly.

      You will use a 2x2 to map joy against growth, revealing what your career choices say about your priorities. You will apply the power-influence matrix to workplaces you are already in, learning to spot allies and read power dynamics before your next move. Then you will build three Odyssey Plans, each a different version of where your life and career could go.

      Based on the Designing Your Life framework, this exercise breaks tunnel vision and opens up options you may have dismissed too quickly. You will rate each plan on confidence, engagement, and alignment with who you are, and walk away with a clearer, more honest picture of what is possible.

    • Immersive digital storytelling - scrollytelling, interactive data visualisations, dynamic maps - was once the exclusive domain of specialist teams with deep expertise in web design, coding, and data analysis. Recent developments in AI models and AI agents are changing that.

      This hands-on workshop introduces participants to Claude Code, an AI-powered coding tool that makes it possible for journalists and editors with only basic web development knowledge to build compelling, interactive data stories from scratch.

      Working from a single dataset, attendees will build an interactive data story with scroll-driven animations and dynamic charts, and leave with both the skills and the confidence to bring this kind of storytelling into their own newsroom. This workshop will offer journalists practical, up-to-date guidance on protecting their data and sources, using secure communications, and managing the specific risks that arise when crossing borders. Participants will also gain an expert briefing on the evolving digital threat landscape facing journalists today, from targeted spyware to social engineering, for strengthening their digital security.

      In the first half of this special session, we have invited former AAJA-Asia presidents to look back on their journey: why they joined AAJA in the first place, what role the association has played in their careers, what sets AAJA apart from other journalism networks, and a defining memory from their time leading the chapter.

      In the second half, AAJA leaders will share their vision for the future — how they are navigating the industry's challenges within their own organizations, and what a community like AAJA can and should do to better support journalists: helping them stay relevant, grow their careers, and weather an increasingly turbulent profession.
