      Starting with the "Signals" news feed produced by Semafor with the help of tools from OpenAI and Microsoft to the latest research and product developments at AP and Reuters, this session will discuss how leading news media companies are embracing generative AI in their daily news cycle and how they are refining their processes and policies to use AI responsibly in newsgathering and business practices.

      Governmental and non-governmental organizations around the world seem to have finally grasped the urgency of climate change and the key role that environmental reporting can play to identify issues, hold governments and corporations accountable and inform citizens. Even though funding supporting climate reporting has become more widely available, producing quality climate journalism remains a challenge due to the complexity of the issues, their transnational nature, and the many interests at stake. This session will explore how Asian journalists and media outlets are facing these challenges. What kind of specific resources and processes have they developed to cover that beat? What would be needed to make cross-border collaborations easier and climate reporting more impactful?

      The session will focus on why we need to bring a shift in the way the world sees Asia, by creating cutting-edge, globally relevant cross-border stories, meaningful conversations, and innovative collaborations to build communities of action that transcend borders within the region and beyond. The coverage of Asia, particularly in mainstream Western media, remains focused on a couple of stories and stereotypes. The need of the hour is to champion collective, nuanced, and contemporary storytelling that resonates with today’s readers and audiences. We will showcase the work of our members from across Asia, and help the audience to be a part of the conversation on how to reimagine the way we inform the world’s view on Asia. We propose the participation of Syed Nazakat, the CEO and founder of DataLEADS and the Editor-in-Chief of Asian Dispatch.

      N3Con 2024 will feature a series of compact workshops to equip participants with new skills they will be able to use in their reporting as soon as they come back to their respective newsrooms (or freelance assignments). This session will offer a quick review of easily available generative AI tools that any journalist can use to improve their reporting and produce better content with less efforts. It will also help participants identifying and avoiding the main pitfalls of generative AI in a news production context.
