    Lou Albano is a managing editor at GMA News Online in the Philippines. In 2021, she started overseeing the climate and environment coverage of the digital group, creating a digital documentary series that incorporates solutions and local communities in reports on climate and environment. Her training as a lifestyle journalist has given her a fresh perspective on the issue, connecting it to consumerism, culture, health, and gender. Among the topics she’s reported on are reforestation, urban development, and plastic pollution. She belongs to cohort 2 of the Oxford Climate Journalism Network and has been a fellow for the Executive Leadership Program of AAJA-Asia in 2022.

      Governmental and non-governmental organizations around the world seem to have finally grasped the urgency of climate change and the key role that environmental reporting can play to identify issues, hold governments and corporations accountable and inform citizens. Even though funding supporting climate reporting has become more widely available, producing quality climate journalism remains a challenge due to the complexity of the issues, their transnational nature, and the many interests at stake. This session will explore how Asian journalists and media outlets are facing these challenges. What kind of specific resources and processes have they developed to cover that beat? What would be needed to make cross-border collaborations easier and climate reporting more impactful?
