    Eric Wishart is the standards and ethics editor, and former editor-in-chief, of the international news agency AFP. Eric is a member of the ethics committee of the Society of Professional Journalists, teaches journalism at the University of Hong Kong, is a judge for the Hong Kong News Awards and SOPA Awards, and a member of the Organisation of News Ombuds and Standard Editors. He is the author of the recently published “Journalism Ethics: 21 Essentials from Wars to Artificial Intelligence”.

      From covering sensitive stories such as terrorism or sexual abuse to dealing with confidential documents, sensitive business information or ultra-violent graphic material, strong internal standards and the ability to efficiently deploy them in critical situations are key to producing quality journalism and retain audiences' trust. This session will discuss ethics involved in editing, including how to provide managerial guidance to writers, how to spot and solve situations in communications and how to assess internal standards and reference materials in line with your media outlet's values.

      Out of passion for a beat or a story they've extensively covered, following the call of a literary vocation or simply looking for an alternative source of revenues, many journalists have been tempted to write and publish a book. "Every good journalist has a novel in him - which is an excellent place for it", supposedly said Harper Magazine's managing editor, Russel Lynes. But fiction is only one option among many. In this session, journalists who have gone through the experience of writing and publishing books will share their experiences and lessons learnt, from the writing process to dealing with publishers and promoting their work. Was it worth all the trouble? And if so, what will they do differently for their next book?
