    Ellis Ng is a freelance reporter and copywriter who is currently writing for trade publication (Re)in Asia, and others. They were previously an audience growth specialist at The Straits Times and a producer for user-generated content for Reuters. They wrote a minor guide on gender-sensitive reporting in the Singaporean context, and have been a member of the Trans Journalists Association since 2022. Additionally, they have had experience in social media publishing, social media newsgathering, open-source intelligence, video editing and graphic design.

      This session will discuss the challenges of producing a gender-sensitive reporting stylebook for supporting journalists who want to portray the gender-related elements of their reports in an accurate and neutral manner. AAJA-Asia is currently coordinating the production of such a stylebook in five different Asian markets. Debbie Goh and Ellis Ng will discuss the factors influencing gender-inclusive language adoption in relation to Singapore’s cultural and political sensitivities, and how the Singapore version of the stylebook prioritizes gender-neutral language over non-binary inclusive language as an actionable approach for improving DEI in news.
