    N3Con 2024 brings together journalists and media professionals throughout Asia.     • Content Review Simulation is a program where participants are presented with real-life case studies of policy enforcement actions across Google products and given the opportunity to make simulated content moderation decisions based on the information presented.     • AAJA-Asia is proud to invite N3Con participants to attend the Singapore Premiere of the award-winning documentary film "Zero Waste", in presence of the film director, Danny Kim.

      As the world continues to come face to face with the consequences of decades of environmental degradation, Danny Kim’s documentary explores the ways that five individuals in South Korea have taken it upon themselves to create solutions to the country’s plastic waste problems, which has been exasperated by the global pandemic, and whether their efforts can be enough to make up for decades of neglect. Both sobering and uplifting, Zero Waste paints a portrait of both the magnitude of the problem, and the perseverance of those people willing to address them.

      This is a limited-seat event organized in partnership with The Korean Embassy in Singapore, CLA Global and the Singapore Press Club. Seats can be booked via the RSVP form that will be sent to all N3Con 2024 registered participants a few days ahead of the event.

    • Governmental and non-governmental organizations around the world seem to have finally grasped the urgency of climate change and the key role that environmental reporting can play to identify issues, hold governments and corporations accountable and inform citizens. Even though funding supporting climate reporting has become more widely available, producing quality climate journalism remains a challenge due to the complexity of the issues, their transnational nature, and the many interests at stake.     • Out of passion for a beat or a story they've extensively covered, following the call of a literary vocation or simply looking for an alternative source of revenues, many journalists have been tempted to write and publish a book. "Every good journalist has a novel in him - which is an excellent place for it", supposedly said Harper Magazine's managing editor, Russel Lynes. But fiction is only one option among many. In this session, journalists who have gone through the experience of writing and publishing books will share their experiences and lessons learnt, from the writing process to dealing with publishers and promoting their work. Was it worth all the trouble? And if so, what will they do differently for their next book?

    • This session will discuss the challenges of producing a gender-sensitive reporting stylebook for supporting journalists who want to portray the gender-related elements of their reports in an accurate and neutral manner. AAJA-Asia is currently coordinating the production of such a stylebook in five different Asian markets. Debbie Goh and Ellis Ng will discuss the factors influencing gender-inclusive language adoption in relation to Singapore’s cultural and political sensitivities, and how the Singapore version of the stylebook prioritizes gender-neutral language over non-binary inclusive language as an actionable approach for improving DEI in news.

    • The session will focus on why we need to bring a shift in the way the world sees Asia, by creating cutting-edge, globally relevant cross-border stories, meaningful conversations, and innovative collaborations to build communities of action that transcend borders within the region and beyond. The coverage of Asia, particularly in mainstream Western media, remains focused on a couple of stories and stereotypes.     • This session will offer an in-depth overview of the Associated Press' Local News AI Initiative which ran for two years from August 2021 through September 2023. It will explain the reasons for its creation, and the industry issues it tried to address. Should Asian journalists and publishers willing to replicate this project in Asia, the speaker will also provide insights on the project's funding, operational, and management structure of the initiative. Finally, he will sahre key takeaways from the Local News AI Initiative, and how AP is using what they learned so far to progress the industry further."

    • Long dominated by the SPH / Mediacorp duopoly, the Singapore media scene has seen small - online only - independent media companies blossoming in recent years. NIMBUS, a volunteer-run network of civil society and independent media organizations, holds regular workshops, panel discussions and events for their members as well as media fairs to engage with the general public. In this session, Nimbus representatives will explain how their network was launched and how they hope to nurture an independent media ecosystem in Singapore. The Singapore Climate Change Rally (SGCR) will share their experience as members of the Nimbus network and explain how they use multimedia platforms to convey their news, information and specific campaigns.
