David Pierson is a China correspondent for The New York Times. He covers Chinese foreign affairs. Before joining The Times in 2022, he was a foreign correspondent for The Los Angeles Times based in Singapore covering Southeast Asia. He was previously posted in Beijing covering China. A native of Hong Kong, he has written extensively about the retreat of democracy in Asia and the geopolitical friction between China and the United States. He is the winner of numerous journalism awards, receiving honors from the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Press Club and the Gerald Loeb Awards.
