Chris Buckley is chief China correspondent for the New York Times, and has been working from his hometown, Sydney, Australia, after being forced to leave China in May 2020. Before then, he had spent much of the past 24 years in China, most of it as a reporter for Reuters and the New York Times. He has written widely about Chinese politics and social change, and was in Wuhan, where the Covid pandemic started, for two and a half months in 2020. Lately, though, he mostly works remotely.
