Shibani Mahtani is the Southeast Asia and Hong Kong Bureau Chief for the Washington Post, covering a 10-country turf from the Philippines to Indonesia and Myanmar. Prior to joining the Post last year, Shibani spent seven years as a correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, most recently based in Chicago covering the Midwest. Before moving to Chicago, she covered Myanmar for the Journal from a base in Yangon from 2013 – 2016. Shibani was born and grew up in Singapore, and is a graduate of the London School of Economics and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
