Trinna Leong is a Malaysia Correspondent for The Straits Times after working at The Malaysian Insider and Reuters. A graduate of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, she has lived a different past before entering the news industry. Once a varsity debater, chemist and copywriter, she ventured into news to fill her daily quota of adrenaline rush, covering a myriad of topics ranging from politics, economy to social issues. Her work includes covering the two Malaysia Airlines accidents in 2014, the high profile court case of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim in which he was imprisoned for sodomy, the murder and subsequent trial over the death of Kim Jong Nam – elder sibling of North Korea’s leader. Much of her daily grind involves understanding Malaysian politics by analyzing signs from market movements, announcements by power players from both the ruling party and opposition, and covering the 2018 nationwide Malaysian election.
